Behind every successful business is an owner that put endless hours into making their business idea come to life. miFLAVOUR was co-founded on a shoestring budget by Maximus and Ella Piskun. They are the creators and co-owners of this reputable contemporary bakery. Below they answer some very important questions that will allow you a sneak peak behind the scenes of miFLAVOUR, which is much more than just pretty desserts!
1. HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?
We met at a volleyball tournament.
2. WHY ARE YOU IN THIS TYPE OF BUSINESS?
A bakery is all about making people happy, and that’s exactly what we strive and love to do every day!
3. HOW DID YOU GET THE BACKGROUND AND SKILLS NECESSARY TO RUN THIS TYPE OF BUSINESS?
I have practiced basic baking skills ever since I can remember. But what really prepared me for running this type of business is completing the baking program at Spokane Community College as well as working at multiple bakeries. However, even with all that experience, none of it really prepared me for running a business. miFLAVOUR is something I definitely wouldn’t have been able to build or run without Max. He is truly the mastermind behind our whole company.
I have been an entrepreneur my entire life. I have always dreamed of running a successful business that offers customers the best possible experience and offers employees a place they love to work. My life experiences have shaped me into who I am today as a business owner. I delivered newspapers for nine years, worked in the construction industry for five years, ran my own sole proprietorship and worked at a professional engineering firm for six years. I gained knowledge and experience from working at numerous companies and running my own. While working for each company, I studied the structure behind each business and soaked in what I liked and didn’t like about their strategies and ethics. Now I’m able to take all that knowledge and experience and put together a business that is built on honesty and integrity backed by extensive knowledge and experience.
4. WHY DO YOUR CUSTOMERS SELECT YOU OVER YOUR COMPETITORS?
miFLAVOUR truly stands out from other bakeries. Our style is completely different from any bakery around. There are not many bakeries that make everything from scratch, and we don’t blame them. We made the decision to stick to “completely from scratch” early on. It hasn’t been easy but has been totally worth it! This is also the reason why many customers are surprised at our prices. We are more expensive than a typical bakery but trust us, you can taste the difference!
5. WHAT SERVICE(S) OR PRODUCT(S) DO YOU OFFER?
We offer lots of products! We are most known around town for our famous French macarons. Although these are incredible, they are not the only dessert we offer. We also specialize in custom, organic, vegan, and gluten free desserts. 6. TO WHAT AND WHOM DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR SUCCESS?
There are a few things.
• God is the number one reason why we have come this far. He has blessed us so abundantly and we are forever grateful!
• We could not have come this far without each other. miFLAVOUR would not exist without Max or Ella; our mutual support and love for one another made this business a reality.
• Our employees! We are so blessed with our amazing team!
• Support of friends and family. We have had many people in our lives that have been there for us when we needed them the most.
• New relationships we have made along the way. We have met many great people. Our web developer is one of those people. She sacrificed her personal time to help build us a website so our business idea could become a reality.
7. WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
Each order we receive is treated with utter respect and attention. We handle each order individually with one goal in mind: to make the customer 100% satisfied with their purchase and experience.
8. WHAT’S YOUR COMPANY’S GOALS?
Our main goal is to make as many people happy with our services as possible. With that being said, we are hoping to reach as many people as we can worldwide! We believe that everyone should get to experience our extraordinary desserts and services!
9. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN AN EMPLOYEE?
We look for people who are self-motivated and are truly passionate about baking. We love to see our team get excited about working for us! We cherish employees that are eager to grow their careers at miFLAVOUR and care about our future and name. These are the team members that make miFLAVOUR one of the best places to work.
10. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR BUSINESS IN THE NEXT YEAR? IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? THE NEXT TEN YEARS?
We are hoping to open a retail store front and offer online shipping within the next year. Next, have our major products available at major stores like Costco, Rosauers and Trader Joe’s throughout the nation within five years. Then, within the next ten years we want to be able to offer our products worldwide with numerous retail locations throughout the nation.
11. WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR MOST “STARTLING” EXPERIENCES WHEN OPENING A BUSINESS?
One of our most startling experiences was when we had a few “successful” business owners tell us that the only we could become successful is if we cut corners when building a new business. We evaluated our values and reminded ourselves that we are not going to be the type of business that cuts corners. Not with our customer, our employees or any other relationship we encounter. It is very important to us that we are recognized as an honest and trustworthy business.
12. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST EXCITING ABOUT ARRIVING AT MIFLAVOUR IN THE MORNINGS?
The most exciting part about arriving at miFLAVOUR in the morning is seeing our employees. We love to see people that are passionate about their jobs and are here to grow their careers within our company.
13. HAVE YOU MADE MISTAKES ALONG THE WAY THAT YOU REGRET?
All the mistakes we have made along the way taught us how to avoid them in the future. So no, we don’t regret anything. Mistakes make us who we are today. It is important to learn how to accept failure as lessons learned and use the knowledge you got to build a stronger future.
14. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT MIFLAVOUR?
Our employees and customers. We are always excited to see how hard our employees work to grow their careers and how enjoyable they make our work environment. It’s also exciting to meet new and existing customers. Hearing how much they have been enjoying our products and services is always encouraging.
15. WHAT DO YOU LIKE LEAST ABOUT MIFLAVOUR?
We don’t like that there is not enough time in the day to grow our business faster and to spread the miFLAVOUR experience throughout the nation for more people to enjoy.
16. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU KNEW BEFORE YOU STARTED THIS BUSINESS?
We wish that we really thought through how hard it would to start a business. We had to make many hard decisions and live through difficult times. Max had to give up his daily job at an engineering company, and we practically got 1 hour of sleep daily on average first year in business. Nevertheless, we got through our first rush of hardships and are very happy with all the results.
17. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS IDEA AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH IT?
My very first attempt at a business was when I was 9 years old. My cousins had parakeets and chicks that eventually grew up and reproduced, making many more parakeets. I wanted to do the same with the two parakeets that my parents already had. I knew that if I did this, I would be able to exchange my extra parakeets for cash at the local pet store. To kick off this home-based business, I first hand-crafted a bird house for them. Then, I followed all essential steps for a successful breeding process. After a few months of no eggs, I realized that I missed an essential first step: checking the gender of the parakeets. I quickly realized that two male parakeets won’t help a successful breeding business. My parents had a pink and a green parakeet, how was I supposed to know that pink is also a male color?!
I have never had any other first business other than miFLAVOUR. I had a passion for baking starting at a young age. My parents didn’t let me use the kitchen oven when I was 8 years old so I improvised and got a microwave recipe book. That’s right, I baked cupcakes and cookies with only a microwave. When I was finally old enough, I started baking desserts for family and friends. None of these projects were paid but I gained experience. I had always hoped that all that extra baking practice would pay off in the future. Now I get to use all that experience to run the baking side of the business.
18. HAVE YOU EVER TURNED DOWN A CUSTOMER?
Yes, we have turned down customers and various clients after learning more about their request. The customer is not always right. There should be mutual respect between the customer and business. We value our service and the products we provide. Our products are not fitting for every customer. We offer quality service and products; those two resources come with high overhead costs. Not everyone cares about butter over margarine, or Real Vanilla Extract over imitation, but we do! Nevertheless, we strive to always be professional in every situation and if we take an order, we offer happiness or your money back.
19. WHAT IS YOUR COMPANY TAG LINE?
TASTEFUL COMBINATIONS. We are here to provide desserts with tasteful/yummy ingredients, backed by a tasteful/attractive presentation.
20. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS WHO ARE STARTING THEIR OWN BUSINESSES?
Set yourself a business goal that you think is nearly impossible to achieve (world’s top 100 company) and complete small daily tasks while focused on that goal. If you do that, tomorrow you will be closer to your goal than you have ever been before. It’s those little tasks that add up to something remarkable that you thought was impossible. You are more capable than you think you are. In order to achieve your goal, don’t be afraid to take risks. Calculated risks can lead to a successful future you’ve been dreaming about. Starting a business is like finding the love of your life. Don’t go looking for success (love), just enjoy what you love to do and success (love) will find you.
